Michael R. McCarthy serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Northern Essex Community College (NECC). Michael is responsible for providing leadership and oversight in the areas of finance, human resources, budgeting, strategic planning, information technology, purchasing, facilities, maintenance, safety and security, police and sheriff training academies, auxiliary services, athletics and wellness. Michael joined Northern Essex Community College in 2016. Prior to joining NECC, Michael served for over 16 years at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Middleton, MA as the Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his appointment as CEO, Michael served as the Chief Financial Officer and de facto Chief Administrative Office for the department.

Originally from Newburyport, MA, he has lived in Middleton, MA for more than 12 years where he and his wife, Jennifer, an elementary school teacher, are the proud parents of three boys, Connor, Chris, and Caden. Additionally, he has volunteered in many youth sports organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for the Middleton Youth Baseball and Softball Association, as past president.

Michael holds a Master of Science degree in Administration from Boston College, an Advanced Management Certificate in International Trade from the American Graduate School of International Management, Phoenix, Arizona, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Tufts University.
